Tuition-free STEM program for 6th-8th grade girls.

Independence Community College, Fab Lab ICC and Verizon are preparing the next generation for a future filled with opportunities. We are offering a free program to engage middle school girls in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). Through the program, girls will get hands-on, immersive learning in design thinking, 3D printing, augmented reality and social entrepreneurship.

    Program Details:

    • There is no cost for students
    • Breakfast, lunch and transportation will be provided during the summer camp.
    • Participating students who meet attendance requirements will receive a tablet as a take-home gift at the end of camp.

In order to get the most from the STEM camp experience, daily attendance is critical. Campers must be able to commit to the full three weeks of camp and to the full six hours each day. We certainly understand unexpected occurrences, like illness or family emergencies, and allowances will be made for those instances. However, students will not be allowed to “start and stop” (due to scheduled vacations, other camps, etc.) or take days off at the beginning, middle or end of camp. Campers with poor attendance may forfeit their opportunity to participate in field trips, the Final Showcase or other special activities. Campers must attend the equivalent of 13 of the 15 scheduled days in order to receive their exit gifts, including a Verizon Ellipsis Tablet.

If you have concerns about attendance requirements, please reach out to our camp director. Our objective is to provide an educational, fun and fulfilling experience to our students. Therefore, we want to be sure we are reaching girls who want to be there and are willing to commit the required time and energy.

    DATE: July 15-August 2 (9 a.m. - 3 p.m.)

The program includes summer camp, plus one Saturday a month throughout the school year.

COMMUNITY BOOT CAMP: How To Start a FAB LAB from Ground Zero

    September 10 - 12, 2019 in Independence, Kansas

From our humble beginnings on October 1, 2014 in a rural southeastern Kansas town of less than 10,000 people some remarkable things have happen that, in addition to efforts by other community groups, are starting to help move the needle in revitalizing our area economy.

Join us for 2 1/2 days to learn how you might set up the entrepreneurial mindset and maker space in your community to greatly enhance your community revitalization efforts. A Fab Lab or maker space can support entrepreneurial start-ups and small business development in many ways besides just the prototyping of new products.
